 assalamualaikum wr. wb

A. Definition of Caption Text

Caption is the text that appears or is below the image. In today's digital era, it is difficult to find captions, memes are a form of caption, because they display images with text. Caption consists of several descriptions of words or several sentences. sometimes in some pictures, such as captions, the words are not made by themselves, the name of the songwriter must be included.

And it must be remembered that a good caption is the right caption to be positive, meaning to provide moral or motivational lessons to the reader, some even say this caption is similar to a poster, if the poster is a print media caption is usually available via electronic media or the internet.

Captions are included in the type of text or genre, so caption writing must also have criteria. A good caption clearly identifies the subject of the image clearly, although not in too much detail, due to limited space for writing. It's not just good writing. It turns out that the quality of the image selection is also one of the caption requirements that we make interesting. Captions can be words, sentences, or phrases.

B. Good English Caption Writing Procedures

A good caption as a complement to the explanation can be written in the following way:

  1. Don't use article words like a, an, or the
  2. As much as possible use Present Tenses so that the picture can be explained
  3. Provide information to readers that cannot be obtained just by looking at pictures
  4. There is a caption to complete the photo, not a substitute for the photo
  5. Writing the caption does not have to start with the name
  6. Write a caption to indicate the individual, can use the word "from left", NOT "from left to right".
  7. No need to write clear words like “Above” and “pictured here”
  8. Mention the name in the caption only if the name is really important
  9. Start writing a good caption in English with some variations of the following words:

  • prepositional phrase
  • -infinitive phrase
